What does an industrial kebab really contain?
The truth behind its low price
Kebab has become one of the most popular fast foods in Spain. Cheap, quick, filling. But... do we really know what we are eating when we order one?
We investigate the ingredients of industrial kebabs, the most common type found in restaurants and franchises.
What exactly is an industrial kebab?
Although it is presented as beef or chicken on a vertical rotisserie, in most cases:
These are not meat fillets, but an ultra-processed industrial mixture.
It is manufactured in factories, frozen and distributed to restaurants in large rolls.
What ingredients does an industrial kebab contain?
Analyses by consumer organisations have revealed that inside we can find:
Low-quality meat and scraps
Cuts from the carcass, not prime cuts.
Skin, collagen and cartilage
These add volume and texture (not nutrition).
Added fats
To make it look juicy even with poor-quality meat.
Injected water and ice
The goal: to increase weight at no cost.
Flour, starch and soya
Used as cheap fillers.
Additives and preservatives
Colourings, gelling agents and stabilisers.
Flavour enhancers (E-621)
They mask the real flavour of the mixture.
(The less real meat, the greater the economic benefit for the industry).
Is it really beef kebab?
In most cases: NO.
Many meatballs sold as ‘beef’ contain a much higher proportion of chicken, fat and pork scraps. All of this is mixed together and reconstituted to make it look like something else.
Why is it so cheap?
Industrial kebab supplier price:
€4.70–4.90 per kilo
Cost per serving: €0.50–0.60
Selling price: €5–7
Extraordinary margin → a lucrative business for many establishments.
What are the health risks?
High salt content
Saturated fats
Additives that may affect the digestive system
Very low nutritional value
It is considered an ultra-processed product.
